Mixed Nite Elements for the Solution of the Variably Saturated Ow Equation

چکیده
In this work, we present a two-dimensional mixed-hybrid nite element model of variably saturated ow on unstructured triangular meshes. Velocities are approximated using lowest order Raviart-Thomas (RT 0) elements with piecewise constant pressure. The resulting nonlinear systems of algebraic equations are solved using Picard or Newton iterations. Theroretical superconvergence properties of the RT 0 approach are experimented on analytical sample problems. It is shown that second order convergence on the pressure head and velocity elds can be obtained at particular points of the triangulation also on nonuniform meshes. Simulations on a realistic sample test show that the Newton approach achieves fast convergence if a good initial guess is provided by either the Picard scheme or relaxation techniques.

Well bore boundary conditions for variably saturated ̄ow modeling
Well bore boundary conditions are incorporated in a three-dimensional ®nite element model that solves the variably saturated groundwater ̄ow equation. One-dimensional line elements, which are used to discretize the ̄ow equation along the well screen, are superimposed onto three-dimensional porous media elements. The use of line elements allows the inclusion of well bore storage eects, and also...

A least-squares mixed nite element formulation is applied to the nonlinear elliptic problems arising in each time-step of an implicit Euler discretization for variably saturated ow problems. This approach simultaneously constructs approximations to the ux in Raviart-Thomas spaces and to the hydraulic potential by standard H 1-conforming linear nite elements. Two important properties of the leas...
متن کاملSelection of Intermodal Conductivity Averaging Scheme for Unsaturated Flow in Homogeneous Media
The nonlinear solvers in numerical solution of water flow in variably saturated soils are prone to convergence difficulties. Many aspects can give rise to such difficulties, like very dry initial conditions, a steep pressure gradient and great variation of hydraulic conductivity occur across the wetting front during the infiltration of water. So, the averaging method applied to compute hydraul...

We present the development of a two-dimensional Mixed-Hybrid Finite Element (MHFE) model for the solution of the nonlinear equation of variably saturated ow in groundwater on unstructured triangular meshes. By this approach the Darcy velocity is approximated using lowest order Raviart-Thomas (RT 0) elements and is \exactly" mass-conserving. Hybridization is used to overcome the ill-conditioning...

FLOTRAN is a ground water ̄ow and transport model developed in the past few years which takes advantage of recent advances in numerical methodology. FLOTRAN solves the governing equations for ̄ow and contaminant transport using Godunovmixed methods, in which a higher-order Godunov method is used to approximate the advective ̄ux, and a mixed ®nite element method is used for the dispersive transp...
